Several courses at United have online components and/or are offered in a blended web/classroom format.

BlackboardStudents enrolled in a course or D.Min. group with an online component may log into Blackboard. A username and password are required. The Blackboard web site will open in a new browser window.

Students registered for (or considering) a course with an online component should take the Online Learning Readiness Survey. Completion of this survey is required for some courses.

Online and Hybrid Courses for Fall 2008

United Theological Seminary offers selected courses in a fully online format (no meetings on campus) or in a hybrid format (online plus two weekend sessions on campus).

These courses provide the same quality of education as our traditional courses with the added flexibility of attending class from any location with Internet access.

New students or persons wishing to take online courses as Special Students may contact the Admissions Office for details.

Online classes

CH 101-ol History of Christianity 1

An introductory survey of Christianity from the New Testament to 1400 A.D. Emerging institutional structures, practices and beliefs, as well as significant leaders and events will be studied in both primary and secondary sources. Three semester hours. Instructor: Dr. Andrea Janelle Dickens.

ET 201-ol Introduction to Christian Ethics

Course will explore sociological, political and economic factors which influence decision making, critical issues and theological perspective related to decision making and contemporary perspectives resulting from cultural change. Three semester hours. Instructor: Dr. Kevin Carnahan.

Hybrid classes

Hybrid classes will meet on campus two weekends and the remainder of the work will be online.

DN 102 United Methodist History

An introductory survey of the Methodist movement in its various historical traditions in England, America and around the world from the time of John Wesley to the present. The course provides United Methodist history credit. Two semester hours. Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Woodruff Tait.

DN 103 United Methodist Polity

The contemporary expressions of the organization and administration of The United Methodist Church are explored through the Discipline, the experience of the denomination interpreted by various resource persons, and the use of two texts. Two semester hours. Instructor: Dr. G. Edwin Zeiders.

DN 119 UCC History and Polity

Course will introduce students to the history, theologies, liturgical traditions, polity, organization, ministerial authorization policies and practices, and mission of the United Church of Christ. Three semester hours. Instructor: The Reverend Jim Eller.

DN 207 United Methodist Doctrine

A study of the basic and characteristic doctrines of the Wesleyan heritage. Beginning with the theological position and contribution of John Wesley, the distinctive Wesleyan approach and teachings will be traced down to the present. Two semester hours. Prerequisite: Introduction to Theology. Instructor: Dr. Wendy Deichmann Edwards.

NT 121 Introduction to New Testament 1

Course is on the four canonical Gospels, Acts, the Catholic Epistles, Hebrews, and Revelation, with specific attention to the history, culture, and literature of the early church and the ways in which these came to bear on New Testament writings. Three semester hours. Instructor: Dr. David F. Watson.
