Baptist House of Studies
Program
The Baptist House of Studies was developed for students who want to become well prepared for Christian ministry and leadership in Baptist contexts.
Students are formed in Baptist heritage and identity through ministry formation groups, coursework, worship and common meals, and informal occasions.
Courses aligned with Baptist Studies include:
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Augustine
- The European Reformations
- Calvin and Calvinism
- Baptist Polity and History
- Baptist Theology
- Baptist, Evangelical and Pentecostal Theologies
The Baptist House of Studies at United provides theological coursework, support and hospitality for students with Baptist affiliations.
In the ecumenical environment of United Theological Seminary, Baptist students are encouraged to learn about Baptist history, theology, polity and worship, and to prepare for ministry and leadership in Baptist contexts.
In addition to specialized courses, Baptist students gather at least three times per semester for denominational family lunches to foster friendships, share information and build connections with others in Baptist traditions.
Begun in 2007 at the request of Baptist church leaders in southern Ohio, the Baptist House of Studies is supported by an Advisory Council that includes Baptist faculty, church and community leaders and United Theological Seminary staff.

What People Are Saying
United has long prepared Baptist students for their ministries.
We realize that there is something special about our students. We must spread the Gospel to the whole world.
Come join us as we make God’s word sovereign everywhere.
~ Daryl Ward, Pastor, Omega Baptist Church
We may live in a “post-denominational” society, but the various denominations’ theological moorings, historical traditions, styles of preaching, witnessing, and worshiping, and ways of addressing social conditions remain important for those who will lead tomorrow’s congregations.
United Theological Seminary’s commitment to nurturing an understanding of these dimensions of faith among Baptist students will meet a great need in Ohio and beyond.
~ Jacob Dorn, Professor of History, Wright State University
The Baptist House of Studies and the academic concentration in Baptist studies is a vital part of United’s strategic plan.
Our Board of Trustees has fully endorsed this important initiative and supports the building of strong ecumenical partnerships, which are crucial as the school experiences shifts within and outside of the church and the culture.
~ Everett Telljohann, United Theological Seminary Board Member
