November 28, 2005
We are pleased to announce that as of Monday, November 28, all of United’s offices have moved to the Trotwood Campus! Classroom preparations have been made and all classes are now being held at the new campus.
We are doing everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible, and patience is requested as we all adjust.
The renovations are nearly complete, with carpeting installed on the first floor, with the exception of the pool area. The classrooms, offices, hallways and other areas are beautiful and nearly ready. The library looks wonderful.
On November 18, a progressive lunch and “play day” was held at the new campus for staff, faculty and students. Each course of the lunch was held in a different part of the building, with various departments hosting and giving tours. Staff participated in ‘role playing” some scenarios of situations that may occur in the new building, and discussed some action plans for handling them.
November 3, 2005
The Administration Wing is nearly complete and the offices which have moved in are getting settled.
The library security system is being installed and progress can be seen in the classrooms and other areas of the Academic Wing.
The front desk / reception area is now in place and will soon be ready to welcome visitors to campus.
October 26, 2005 - First Moves to New Campus!
On Tuesday, October 18, 2005 the President’s Office and the Development staff officially moved to the Trotwood campus.
By Thursday, those staff members had working computers and phones, and the Business Office began their move.
On October 24, Enrollment Management (Registrar, Financial Aid, and Admissions) offices moved.
Remaining at the Harvard Boulevard campus will be Carol Price, receptionist; Julie Hostetter, Director of Academic and Student Services; faculty, doctoral office staff, and maintenance staff.
Classes, common meal, worship and West Virginia classes will continue in Bonebrake Hall, Roberts Hall, and Zimmerman Chapel until a firm date is set to relocate faculty and classes. One Business Office work station will remain in Roberts Hall with limited hours.
Until relocation is completed, we ask for everyone’s patience and support. We will have limited student services in Bonebrake Hall, and forms will be available at the front desk.
October 10, 2005
Progress on various stages of work continues throughout the facility. The flooring in the main lobby is complete.
Over half of the library books have been moved from the Harvard Blvd. campus and put in place. Carpeting is in place in the library circulation desk and EUB Heritage room areas.
Work has begun to construct the various display cases throughout the building. The lecture auditorium room is taking shape with the platform area nearly complete and brackets for the tables are in place.
October 3, 2005
Carpet installation is complete in the administrative office area and the move to Trotwood is becoming more concrete today with the actual move of the President’s office and Development staff offices. These are the first individuals to be moved to our new campus so this is a significant milestone.
The library carpet and shelving installation is complete and books are being moved in today as well. Flooring (carpeting and vinyl tile) is complete in the faculty office area and ceramic floor tile installation has begun in the main lobby.
The practice chapel walls have been painted and soundproofing is being installed in the studio and editing suite.
All furniture that was being stored in the multi-purpose room has been removed to make way for the celebratory events next week and the renovation work in that area will commence the following week.
September 26, 2005
The
ceiling is complete in the main entrance hallway including ceiling tiles,
light fixtures, and panels that look like clouds in the sky over what
will become the two lounge seating areas.
The library transformation continues with the end panels on many of the shelving units installed and the installation of the tracker organ from the chapel complete.
Installation of the administrative wing carpet in open public spaces is underway. Once that carpet installation is complete we will be seeking a temporary occupancy permit so that we can begin moving administrative offices into the facility.
The
Pohly Meetinghouse conference room is complete with the exception of
minor finishing touches and that space was formally dedicated on Sunday,
September 25th.
September 19, 2005
The Mauerhan and Smith conference rooms are nearly complete with installation of carpet, vinyl wall covering, and base and chair rail molding finished this week. The Pohly conference room is also nearing completion with carpet, vinyl wall covering, casework, and lighting fixtures in place.
Lighting
is also in place in the office area for the Institute for Applied Theology
and that, along with natural lighting from windows at the east end of
the room, brightens the area up nicely.
The library is really beginning to look like a library as the shelving is being assembled and installed in that area. Carpeting and walls for the partial rooms are almost finished.
The President’s office and offices for the Institutional Advancement department are complete with the exception of carpet in the public areas. Once that carpet is in place we hope to begin moving those individuals into their new work spaces.
September 12, 2005
The
construction work can now be seen from outside the building as cuts are
being made in the parking lot for the islands that will house additional
lighting and landscaping.
Carpet installation is underway in the library and drywall has been installed for the two partial rooms in that area. All walls in the library office areas have now been framed and are ready for drywall.
Carpet installation has expanded into the Mauerhan and Smith conference rooms and those rooms are nearly ready for the installation of vinyl wall covering. The crown molding and the window frame in the Pohly conference room that opens out onto the main hallway have been installed and are stained beautifully to match the casework in the room.
The tiered flooring in the lecture hall classroom is about halfway complete and that space is proving to be attractive to outside groups as a potential future site for staff training.
Door frames in the faculty office area have been painted and all ceiling grids in that area are in place.
Cabinetry has been installed in the IAT office area for the kitchenette. New cabinets have also been installed in the kitchenettes in the administrative area.
September 5, 2005
It is overwhelming to see the progress to date and think back to the beginning of the work. On this beautiful Labor Day afternoon, a volunteer was seen cleaning blinds for the academic offices and a student was hard at work outside preparing to install our new informational sign beside the driveway. The efforts of all of our volunteers as well as the paid construction team, movers, and our own staff are resulting in a facility that is shaping up to be truly remarkable.
The library is taking shape more every day. The ceiling grid and lighting is complete and walls for two partial rooms in that area have been framed. Most notably, the windows in the south wall have been installed allowing the room to be infused with natural light as well as providing what will be a beautiful view of the lawn and woods behind the building once the construction equipment has been removed.
Drywall
work is complete in the faculty office suite and the walls have been
primed in preparation for painting. The grids for ceiling tiles have
been installed in over half of those offices.
The multi-purpose room has been cleared of much of the furniture that was being stored there. The furniture that could not be used in the new facility was taken to auction and items identified to be used were moved into the appropriate offices or into other spaces for interim storage.
The hallways in the main entrance area and the administrative wing have been cleared to make way for removal of carpet and work on the ceiling treatments. Carpet has been installed in the main admissions open office area which makes it much easier to envision the finished product.
August 29, 2005
The
faculty offices are beginning to resemble offices as all drywall has
been hung in that area. Most of the remaining new walls or partial walls
in other areas of the facility have been framed.
Rolls of carpet have been delivered to the jobsite in preparation for installation in the library and other academic areas.
Carpet has been installed in administrative offices and base molding is in place in many of those offices as well.
The ceiling grid in the library is over halfway completed and will add a finished touch to the room.
Cleaning and renovations are underway in the kitchen in preparation for inspections and licensure.
August 22, 2005
The
network servers have been imaged and work on terminating administrative
office cables at the server end in the Network Operations Center is underway.
Network and phone cabling work has begun on the academic wing of the building with drop locations being marked.
Doorframes and doors in the administrative wing were sanded this week to prepare for painting.
The openings for interior doors and windows in library offices were completed this week and door and window frames are in place.
The east wall of the Institute office suite was removed to open the area to exterior windows and the new interior wall at the south end of the space has been framed in.
Drywall has been hung in about one-third of the faculty office area.
The construction schedule has been fluctuating, but we still hope to move the first round of administrative offices to the new campus during the last week of August.
August 15, 2005 update
Painting
is finished in the library except for the areas where doors are being
created. It’s getting hard to remember that the space was formerly a
gymnasium.
Painting is also complete in all offices in the administrative wing with the exception of the main Admissions common area which is currently under construction to add a new reception desk and display case. Network and phone cabling is complete in over half of those offices.
Openings in the walls were completed this week for the Cokesbury Bookstore and the coffee bar. The final stages of demolition are underway with the removal of the ceiling in the main entry hallway and the back wall in the IAT office area that began this weekend.
Work also began this week to do office layouts showing furniture placement and packing continues at the Harvard Blvd. campus.
August 8, 2005 update
The changes this week have again been remarkable.
The
remainder of the carpet in the administrative office area has been removed
and a first coat of paint is complete in that entire area. The second,
and final, coat of paint is underway in the area and already completed
for seven of the offices.
Windows, countertops, and cabinets in the front office area have been removed in preparation for the reception desk and a display case.
Construction and renovation work was started this week in the Mauerhan and Smith conference rooms and soffit areas have been framed and partially dry walled.
All faculty offices have been framed including the new door frames. The rubber gymnasium flooring has been removed in preparation for carpet installation in the library and painting of the ceiling in that area is complete.
August 1, 2005 update
Another week of construction work has passed with significant progress. Most areas in the administrative wing have a first coat of paint including the cinder block walls that had repair work completed during the week.
The
installation of mobile shelving in the rare books room is complete and
the ceiling has been painted. Nearly all of the faculty office walls
have now been framed.
Renovation work is complete in the Network Operations Center (NOC) on the second floor and network equipment is currently being installed.
Although there seems to be a lot yet to be done, we still hope to begin moving administrative offices to the new campus sometime the week of August 22nd.
July 25, 2005 update
Every week brings more significant changes to the new campus.
Many rooms in the administrative wing now have their first coat of new paint. Some areas are awaiting carpet removal before painting will commence, but we are hopeful that the painting of the administrative wing may be complete by the end of the month.
Demolition
in the faculty office area of the academic wing is complete and new walls
are being framed.
Installation of mobile shelving units in the rare books room is well underway. The air handling unit for the main library has been installed and will be operational in a few weeks after set-up and testing is complete.
Packing has begun at the Harvard Campus as faculty and staff prepare for the move that will occur in phases in August and September.
July 11, 2005 update
There are still some parts of the building in the final stage of demolition primarily in the area that will become faculty offices, but the most evident work now is in new construction.
New
doorways have now been completed including frames and new walls in the
administrative wing are framed and awaiting drywall.
Installation of new phone and network cabling is complete in the administrative wing with the exception of final connection at outlets which will be done after painting is complete.
The work to prepare the administrative wing for painting should be complete this week including removal of existing carpeting and patching holes in cinder block walls. Painting of that area is tentatively scheduled to be done later this week and next week.
July 5, 2005 update
This could well be the last week of demolition work and there are more signs of new construction every day.
Some new walls and doorways have been completed and trenches cut in the floor for electrical conduits are being refilled with concrete.
Installation
of new phone and network cabling is ongoing as well as additional cabling
to provide closed-circuit television signal transfer within the building
and cable TV to student lounge and other areas.
The first round of library shelving is due to be delivered this week and installation should begin in the next week or so. The moving company has been selected as well as the security system vendor and meetings are being planned to work out the details of those portions of the project.
Volunteers have been busy painting at the pool and preparing walls in the administrative offices for painting which should begin sometime next week. Work is progressing at a very rapid pace.
June 27, 2005 update
The
demolition phase of the renovation is nearly complete, and we are now
seeing very noticeable progress. There are still some cinder block walls
to be removed, but there is also plenty of new construction to see.
Steel beams topped by sheets of corrugated steel are in place above the library offices to create new rooms on the second floor, and new doorways and hallway access points are being finished with new cinderblocks.
All of the old network and phone cables have been removed from the facility and installation of new cabling is under way. New electrical conduit is being installed in trenches in the gymnasium floor to provide electricity to library tables.
We are also entering the phase of selecting a mover and meeting with designers to decide the best use of our current furnishings and to determine what new furnishings need to be purchased.
June 20, 2005 update
The
demolition phase of the Trotwood Campus renovation is moving along rapidly.
The noise in the building is deafening due to multiple jack hammers operating simultaneously as cinder block walls are removed to make way for new faculty offices, expanded hallways, and openings into various rooms throughout the facility.
Old network and telephone cables are being removed to make way for new cabling that will be up to code. Some aspects of the cabling work are actually slightly ahead of schedule which is always good news.
Furniture that was purchased as part of the property acquisition has been moved to a consolidated location to allow for more rapid progress on the renovation work and to protect items that we plan to keep from falling debris.
Although the building is a mess at present, the work that has been completed makes it possible to envision how open and inviting it will be when complete.
