Admissions for Masters Degree, Basic Graduate Theological Studies (B.G.T.S.), Special Student Status, or Visiting Student Status:

  • Standards for Admission

    All students admitted to United are asked to provide evidence of a growing faith, potential for exercising creative ministry in a professional capacity and personal maturity, and ability to relate well to others.

    All applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited institution.

    Background Checks: United Theological Seminary requires criminal background checks on all degree-seeking applicants.

  • Application Process

    The following application deadlines apply to all Masters’ students:

    Masters’ applicants should submit their application one month prior to the semester for which they are applying unless other arrangements have been made with the Admissions Office.

    International applicants are admitted in the Fall semester only. International applicants must submit their application by January 15 of the year in which they wish to start.


    The following items are required to be sent with application:

    Completed Application form including Application Essays

    $60 Application Fee (make check payable to United Theological Seminary)

    International Students have additional requirements.


    The following items should be sent from the original source:

    4 Reference letters (For MDiv, BGTS, CTS Students, 1 academic/employer, 2 church and 1 lay person)

    3 Reference letters (For MACM and MTS Students, 2 academic/employer and 1 lay person)

    Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended must be issued to United Theological Seminary NOT the student. Faxed copies are not accepted at any time.

    Arrange for completed recommendations to be sent directly from references to the Office of Admissions.


    Essay Question 1 (For all Masters Students)
    Write one essay addressing the issues below. This essay should be two pages in length (typewritten, double-spaced)

    What are your professional goals?

    Why do you wish to enter this seminary and why at this time in your life?  

    To what do you feel called and what gifts do you bring to this vocation?  What affirmations from the people around you have you received regarding this calling? 


    Essay Question 2 (For MDiv, BGTS and CTS Students)
    This essay should be one page in length, following the same instructions given above.

    What do you see to be the most important issue the church will face in the next 10 years?

  • Application Timeline

    Typically new students begin courses in the BC-12 module. Applications and all supporting documents must be received one month prior to the module start date. See the course information for module start and end dates.

    Prospective students seeking Student Pastor appointments in United Methodist churches and all International Students must submit application materials by January 15 before the Fall Semester in which they intend to enroll.
