United welcomes students from throughout the world and is authorized under federal law to enroll a student of international origin (J visa preferred) who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. International students should begin the admission process no less than one year prior to their expected arrival date at United. Students for whom English is a second language are required to have proficiency in English.

  • Application Process

    To be considered for admission, prospective international students must forward the following items to the Admissions Office on or before the appropriate deadline:

    • Application: Completed application for admission including all requested written essays.

    • Application Fee: $75 application fee (US dollars). Information on taking the TOEFL test is available on their web site (http://www.toefl.org) or you may write to Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541.

    • Citizenship: Evidence of nationality and citizenship.

    • Financial Resources: Evidence of adequate financial resources for school and living expenses including copies of bank statements and signed support letters from sponsoring organizations and individuals.

    • Health Insurance: Evidence of health insurance coverage for the entire duration of student’s career. Please note that supporting documentation such as references, transcripts, etc. must be original documents and cannot be copied or faxed.

  • Application Timeline

    All international students must submit full applications, including all supporting documents, no later than January 15 prior to the Fall Semester. New international students are admitted only in the Fall Semester.

  • Recommendations

    Professional and personal recommendations should be submitted online with the application for admission or sent by postal mail to United. At least one reference should be submitted by a judicatory official such as bishop or similar church authority indicating approval of the applicant’s plans to study at United Theological Seminary.

  • Transcripts

    Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended are required. These must be official transcripts sent directly to United by postal mail from the university. Faxed copies are not accepted at any time. Mail transcripts to:

  • Grade Point Average

    Evidence of a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for Masters degrees admission and 3.0 for Doctoral degree admission (based on 4.0 GPA scale) or its equivalent.

    TOEFL Score; Recent TOEFL score of 550 on paper-based tests or 213 for computer-based tests for Masters degrees students and 570 (paper) or 230 (computer) for Doctoral degree students. The score needs to be reported by the testing agency on an original document.
